Here at Wat Sri Boen Ruang, we are running a program that allows foreigners to come and stay in a working Thai temple, where they have the opportunity to hear and study the Dhamma and to learn how to practice Vipassana Meditation by english speaking monks, and for the men to Ordain as a Samanera (Novice) Monk if wished, all under the guidance of the Abbot, Bhante Dr. Apisit.
We differ from many other places here in Thailand, in that we are not a full on Vipassana Meditation center( although plans are under way to construct a purpose built international Vipassana Meditation center for those wishing to do a more intensive practice)
The style of Vipassana Meditation taught is the same as you would find being taught at Vipassana Meditation centers like Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, Wat Rampoeng, and Wat Phra That Sri Chomtong, under the guidence of Ajahn Tong.
The major difference that we have is we offer the chance for men to temporarily ordain as samaneras (Novice Monks) if they wish to do so. While some people see this as “playing monk,” this is due to lack of understanding and would never be viewed this way by the Thai people. The temporary ordination of novice monks is a normal part of Thai culture and many Thai men ordain on a temporary basis as a demonstration of devotion and gratitude to their families, or to gain merit prior to starting life as a married householder.
Those people who come to the temple and do this temporary ordination, leave the temple feeling more enriched from the experience than when they arrived.
They take the 10 precepts and are also expected to keep another 75 rules on top of this.
We have people coming here that have been thinking of ordaining as a monk and find the experience of ordaining as a novice has been a great help with their final decision. Whether you are looking for a place to learn something about Thai culture, coupled with learning more about Buddhism, Dhamma and Vipassana Meditation or if you you would like the chance to spend time in the orange robes as a novice, we have something here to suit everyone. If you are interested in coming to the temple or would like some more information please feel free to contact us: go to the Contact Page.
All stays here at Wat Sri Boen Ruang are on a donation only basis (dana) as in keeping with the Buddha Dhamma. ” The gift of Dhamma excels all other gifts”
